what are scm files and how are they used?

trying to download and use Gimp plugins
file has an extention of .scm... how do I use it?

Plug-ins and script-fus (.scm files) are two different methods of calling GIMP processes and therefore need to be placed in specific folders assigned for them. Plug-ins in the form of .py files require Python installation need to be in the user's .gimp-2.6/plug-ins folder, and all .scm files need to be placed in the user's .gimp-2.6/scripts folder.
