change photo from vertical to horizontal

Asked by rene

I have used the gimp image editor to change a photo from vertical to horizontal, and I cannot figure out how to keep the image on the photo standing upright! I would like to put photos on a digital photo frame, and would prefer to view them all horizontally. The editor only allows me to flip the entire picture. Is it possible to change a vertical picture into a horizontal picture and keep the same image?

I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but I think what you're after is cropping: If you crop the photograph so it's the right shape, by cutting bits off the top and the bottom (without rotating it), then it should display with little or no black borders on the digital photo frame. If you have its specification, you can work out the aspect ratio you need (I think they're 4:3).

The terms I think you're looking for, incidentally, are landscape (wider than it is high) and portrait (vice versa).
