How to handle indexed color images with gimp?

Asked by a-r-k-i-b-o-t-t

How can i change the color palette manually with gimp? The help button from saving a .gif file does not lead to a explanation in the help file.

I would like to change the color palette of an image.

Also the changes don't seem to take effect immediately, for example if i save a rgb color image to a indexed color .gif - it does not show the indexed color's right away in the image properties. Only after reopening the file, the true indexed color takes effekt.

(I tried it with the current gimp from 8.04)

trick to quickly modify image brightness or contrast etc after converting to indexed color,
convert indexed result back to RGB, use colours->brightness etc, then convert back to indexed

after converting to indexed,
convert back to RGB then use select->by colour
play with colours->brightness (hue sliders etc) etc
etc
then when happy with result, convert back to indexed
{image->mode->indexed)

Can you help with this problem?
