Many of my jpg images will no longer open; mdi images will not open at all.

Asked by Robin Young

My MDI (mdi) image files no longer viewable at all. Receiving gimp error message "failed:Unknown file type"
Similar problem with MANY of my JPG (jpg) picture files; error message "failed: JPG image plug-in could not open image"

What is happening to my pictures ? The titles, captions, file names are still in place in folders but the 'Image' is nothing but a black thumbnail with 'JPG' or 'MDI' on it.

It may or not be related... but many of the missing pictures are Also missing from facebook pages.

Please help ! I need to be walked through what is needed to document for assistance.

Try renaming the gimp config folder in home folder. It will be a hidden folder. If its not in the root of your home folder it may be in ~/.config

OK I'll bite... How do I 'rename' the gimp config folder ?
WHAT do I 'rename' this folder once I find it ??

Prior to this problem, I was able to get access to my MDI an JPG images by re-naming the pictures.
Now that is not working.

Thank you for the assistance !
I am still attempting to locate my 'gimp config folder... Seem to have developed multiple problems since I asked this question - update to ubuntu 11.10 seems to have really gone haywire...

Thank you again.

Rename it to something different, anything will do.
