GIMP - how to avoid losing original image?

I used GIMP to reduce the pixel count of a photo (for internet transmission) via the "Scale" command. This worked fine, but the new image was given the same file name as the original, and I can't find the original.
I thought the scaled image would be given a new name, leaving the original intact.

use save AS, not just save
