Boot problem in installation CD (10.10)

Asked by Lone Ranger

I want to install Ubuntu 10.10 in a machine with this mother/CPU PCCHIP M789CG (V3.0A) with Via C3 2000. I currently have Xubuntu 6.06 on it. I want to wipe it out and try the 10.10.
So I tried to boot the computer with the CD on it (using the 386 Desktop edition) and it get stuck here at boot, here is a picture:

So I downloaded the Alternative install version but I got a similar result, it halts at loadling bootlogo.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you burn the CD slowly?
Did you use the "Check CD for defects" once booted to initially?

K3B tested the MD5 checksum before burning the image. It was burned at 4X. I can't use the option "Check CD for defects" since I can't boot, it freezes at an early stage (this makes me wonder if you read the question).

If you see this screen:
http://pricklytech.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/ubuntu-boot-01.png

you can press space and check the CD for defects.

Did the hash which K3b calculated match the hash for the maverick ISO you burned?

Incidentally, I did read the question.

Hello, I don't see such a screen, what I see is the picture posted at the URL I reported. That is the first screen after POST and after trying to boot from CD, so it is impossible to reach such a screen.
Regarding the MD5, there are exactly as reported here: http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu-iso/CDs-Ubuntu/maverick/MD5SUMS
(both desktop386 and alternate386)

Good, means the ISO was good, I can recommend you grab the memory tester, its available on ubuntu CDs as well as the Ubuntu CD range and test your RAM

Do you still get issues with the alternate installer?

Do you have the latest BIOS in your motherboard? If you have a Lucid CD, does taht boot ok?

actionparsnip: Please note that the failure indicated here means that the user does not have any obvious way to use the memory tester or the alternate installer.

delance: GRUB is not involved in any way here, as it is not used to boot the CD.

Lone Ranger: When you see the boot: prompt, try typing "live" (without the quotes) and pressing Enter.

@Colin Watson, On that machine I have a fully working Xubuntu 6.06 installation. Never had any problem related to RAM, I certainly can't discard this as a reason, but I doubt it.
When I tried Ubuntu 10.04, it booted up to the login screen (yes, I saw a login screen in the liveCD) but there is nothing I can do to log me in (even using root and <enter> (press enter key) as password). But I don't care about 10.04 now, I would like to install 10.10 on that machine.
I will try to type live next time (I am not with that computer now).

You won't get a login as root, the account is disabled AND the login system is instructed to reject root logins, even if someone is stupid enough to re-enable the account.

If you cannot login to the graphical system, press CTRL+ALT+F1 and you can then run:

passwd ubuntu

set the password, then press CTRL+ALT+F7 and you can log in using the graphical system, should be ok.

I followed instructions on the link above, and I typed "help" after the ":", and I got a menu HELP INDEX. I was reading options (press F2 through F10 for details, or ENTER to boot) and then it started to boot and I got what I think is the real cause of the problem:

"This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU:
cx8 cmov
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for you CPU"

(BTW, what is cx8 and cmov?)

So the underlaying problem is that Ubuntu 10.10 is not designed for my CPU (Via C3 2000). It looks like this form lacks a button: "Problem can't be solved", so I will press "Just add a comment".
