how do I center text?

Word has the left, right, center icons on the tool bar. How do I find something similar?

gedit is not a word process, it is a simple text editor; it does not format text. There are no plugins registered at http://live.gnome.org/Gedit/Plugins that force alignment via spaces, so I do not think there is any way to automatically center or right-align text.

You probably have OpenOffice Writer installed. That is a word processor that can format text and much more. If you are want to use something simpler, Install AbiWord.
