gedit: how to add buttons to toolbar

How do I add a button to a toolbar in gedit (2.26.1 on Jaunty)?

Ok, this is the wrong answer but the main benefit of using Gedit is that it's so small and light-weight. If you want a more serious text-editor there are plenty to choose from. I like SciTE many like Vim but just use either search tool in synaptic package manager to look for others and try a few

Gedit does not support changes to the toolbar via the UI. The only way to add or remove something from the toolbar is through a plugin. This is probably more effort than you are willing to undertake. There may be a plugin that does what you want:

Thank you, Curtis. The plugin I was using used to have the button I want,
but no longer.... And indeed, since I can use a(n awkard) key combination
to get the same effect, it's not worth my while writing a separate plugin.
