How to indent a block of text in a textfile to the left?

Asked by Joe De Mann

If you want to indent to the right you would use TAB. But what about to the left?

You are quite correct, if you want to indent text you use tab. If you want to restore your text to the left you delete the tab.

To indent to the left is a contradiction in terms similar to indenting to the top or to the bottom.

Well then maybe you could call it "increase indent" and "decrease indent"

both operations are available in Word (both in MS and Ubuntu version), or programming environments like MS visual C++, eclipse, MATLAB... well i think it's just a standard operation available everywhere

In Gedit:
edit -> preferences -> plugins
decrease indent = shift+ctrl+T
