missing fonts after pasting text in gedit

My problem is that when I paste text in gedit it replaces characters as: à ù è ' € "
with other strange signs.
I use to copy these texts from the internet, email or other windows .txt files.
I'm italian but I prefer to use ubuntu in english.
I'm sorry i cannot find a similar faq already answered.

it might be an encoding problem. try changing the encoding in the editor but im not sure if gedit can do it. if it cant u can try kate and paste ur text in there and change the encoding (i guess the default is utf-8) to the encoding of the page u got the txt from

It's amazing how you answer very quicly!
anyway in the edit I really cannot find the encoding menu.
I saw it once opening a file but I do not open a file. I merge texts coping them and stating from a blanck new file / page in gedit.
where should I do it?

we get emails informing us about new problems so we can be as quick as possible ;)

i understand what u are trying to do i just wasnt sure if gedit can change encoding on the fly because i do not use it.

u can do this with kate. to install write in a terminal

sudo apt-get install kate

after it is installed open it and paste ur text. if u have problems with the characters as u described above go to tools / encoding and find the encoding the webpage uses (the one u got the txt from) and use that one and hopefully u will again see the right characters..

Kate is an alternative notepad for Gnome?
I mean your're telling me to use an other editor, not gedit , or install kate inside gedit to fix this?

oh sorry bout that.

kate is an other editor. it is actually for kde but will work in gnome. unfortunatelly i do not know any editor for gnome that can change encoding on the fly (i dont use gnome only kde). u can install kate with the command i gave above

The problem does appear to be an encoding problem.

Gedit is probably using the UTF-8 encoding (charset) which is the default encoding for Ubuntu. UTF-8 contains the largest set of characters.

The email is probable ISO-Latin-15 (Western). It may be another Latin. The only way I know to see the encoding on the email is to view the source (Control-u in evolution) and look for the content-type line

    Content-type: text/plain; charset=utf-8

Start Gedit, Choose "Save as" from the menu. Selet the encoding that matches the encoding of the email. Now paste the text from email into Gedit.
