gedit corrupts my files

Asked by Tarek

When I upgraded to feisty my gedit started corrupting my files!

It started with xorg.conf when I was trying to get my touchpad to work, I then tested on other less important files and it continued to cause same problem. Eversince, I went back to the previous version, which used to work by fully formatting the disk.. Unfortunately, the problem stayed!

In short, as soon as I save a document in gedit I can find two files one with same name with a ~ at the end. Indicating a saved document and a working (still open) document. However, the working document remains in the directory after I exit gedit.

In the case of xorg.conf, ubuntu wouldn't boot and I had to remove both xorg.conf and xorg.conf~ files then copy the back-up to save the day..

Thanks

The xorg.conf~ file is a backup of the original xorg.conf file, you can switch off backups in Edit>Preferences>Editor>Create a backup copy of files before saving.

That you've asked, here's my latest problem!

When I'm in ubuntu, I can see all files and folders in 3 partitions 2 windows in addition to ubuntu. However, my PC can not boot from either of the 2 windows partitions where I get the can not find Autochk program... skipping Autochk!! then goes into an endless reboot sequence! I can see the c: drive if I use installation XP disk and choose recovery mode...

This, I feel, is a big problem with a simple solution.. Have tried many remedies as suggested on different fora but without success..
