Hello,

Ubuntu is based on debian, or deb files...jrd and rpm are packages which are used to install the files.
simply go to terminal window and type

1. sudo apt-get update

2. sudo apt dpkg --configure -a

Hope it solve the issue.

It will automatically extract the packages.

Thanks,

When you have downloaded 8.04 you don't want to extract - you need to burn it as an iso and boot with it.

rpm files using different package (technology) you can't install them as they are, but you can change some of them to deb using a program called alien - install it and read the manual

sudo apt-get install alien
man alien

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation

Sound - you need to provide more information on what sound card you have before anyone will be able to help, if you don't know opena aterminal and do

lspci

There will be a line there that says what soundcard you have

What is the root password when trying to install java?

the root password is your own password when using sudo or gksudo

root itself is apparently a completely different kettle of fish that I've not bothered to look into as yet

As far as the sound card problem I'm afraid I have no idea - it doesn't appear to have recognised it - have you got a separate sound card or is it the onboard one.
