entering ascii characters from keyboard

How can I enter ascii characters from the keyboard that don't appear on my keyboard keys, like the British pound sign and the em-dash?

I know gedit can display them, because they show up when I cut and pasted text from other applications.

A couple of folks on the Ubuntu forums responded to my post there and answered this question. In summary, there are two ways: 1) use the gedit plugin "Snippets" or 2) the AltGr key, if available, on your keyboard layout. The first tool works great, but I haven't tested the second one.
