how to know where gcc is located in file hierarchy

Asked by Karthik.N

I am new to ubuntu. I have to edit few files in the text editor and save them. But when i am adding up a new line in a existing file and save it, it shows that the content is saved. But when i close the text editor and reopen the file, the content i saved is not present. There is no duplicate copy of the file either. What do i do to save the contents in my existing file? This is quite urgent, cause i have to work on this and also i can't go to a pc having Windows Operating system everytime to save a file. Please help me out with this.

Thanks and Regards
Karthik.N

some quick questions.
what editor?
do you own the files? (ie did you create them and are they in your home directory? do a ls -l to see the permissons and ownership and paste the results in a reply it will help us narrow down the issue.)
do you get any error messages?

Well, the file is not created by me. I work as a Mobile game tester and one of the file need to be edited so that we can upload the game onto the Mobile. So when i try to edit the file and save it, it doesn't save. I don't get any kind of error messages too. When i save the file it shows that it is saved and when i close the file and reopen it, the content is not saved.

well there is a bug reported where gedit sometimes doesn't save on smbfs/cifs shares. Have you tried using another text editor such as nano from the command line?

Can you help with this problem?
