gedit package

I downloaded IBM's Lotus but cannot open it with gedit or anything else--help

The download was successful, however when I try to open the Lotus file I get the following:
"gedit has not been able to detect the character coding-- please check that you are not trying to open a binary file. (Don't know how to check to see if it is a binary file.)
