trying to install g-streamer plugins for playing DVD's

Asked by sue bickley

Am new to ubuntu and having several problems, firstly can't get DVD's to play, I have installed gxine and now am asked to install g-streamer ugly plugins. Went to the G streamer sight and downloaded what I think are the right plugins and now having trouble installing them. Am also trying to get on line with Vodafones HUAWEI E220 device and dont know how to go about it. Also having difficulty with printing from any of the Gnome applications, the print screen appears and I'm able to change paper size but the bottom of the screen with the rest of options and print command is not visible, I've tried resizing the page and moving it up but not having any luck. Please help!! Would like very much to stay with Ubuntu as my OS but feeling very frustrated at the difficulty's I'm having. Thanks

You can download the gstreamer plugins from the repositories (use synaptic, aptitude, or apt-get).

Here are more detailed instructions: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

For DVD's, look here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs

And for encrypted DVD's you need the libdvdcss2 from the Medibuntu repos (for Gutsy, 7.10): https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

Let us know if you still have problems.

Many thanks, Have finally downloaded everything including Automatix and Medibuntu and DVD player is working. Getting used to Linux at last and understanding how to make the best of Ubuntu as my OS. Much happier.
