You are operating under the windows mindset. In order to be happy with Linux you have to "unlearn what you have learned" and embrace the Linux way. It is almost never necessary to download and install anything in Linux and it's highly discouraged. Ever wonder why windows has so many problems? The Linux way is to use the automated installer. In Ubuntu this is called Synaptic and is found under system-admin. You can also use the "mini" version that is just called add/remove... under the apps menu.

You can install ClamAV this way (a Linux anti-virus) but I don't bother with any AV. I've never had a problem in two years of running Ubuntu. Some may argue that it's still a good idea "just in case" but that is up to you.

Take a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingSoftware for info on installing software and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats for help with audio/video codecs. I'm not sure what RealTime is but if you are trying to play songs that link will help.

Hello Jim,
Thanks for your quick response - sorry about my delay in responding.
I understand your point on windows/non-linux software and agree to some extent. but I do need to communicate with the outside world and also use non Linux software to gain access to some areas of the Internet e.g. I have just downloaded Google Earth, using the FAQ in Ubuntu Answers - this will be most useful.
Best Regards
Peter

If you need to use windows software (and a Linux equivalent won't work), then you have a couple option. Some software will work under wine http://www.winehq.org/. It's an imperfect solution but getting better all the time. You can also a virtual machine like VMware http://www.vmware.com/. This is still a somewhat complicated process but is also getting very useable. Other than that, you will just have to use windows to run windows software.
