gedit left margin

Asked by rgonnering

I use gedit in Ubuntu frequently. It is a great tool, and has many plugins for various programming languages. It seems to have one major flaw, and that is that the left margin cannot be set. When I 3 hole punch a printout, I end up with voids. It would be great if you could set the left margin from within gedit. I made changes to the .gnome2/gedit/gedit-page-setup file, but it had no affect.

[Page Setup]
PPDName=Letter
DisplayName=US Letter
Width=215.89999389648438
Height=279.39999389648438
MarginTop=6.3499999999999996
MarginBottom=14.224
MarginLeft=14.224
MarginRight=6.3499999999999996
Orientation=portrait

Am I missing something? It wouldn't seem to be that hard to add a left margin setting to gedit. Does anyone have a fix or does anyone know how I could contribute to this? I wouldn't call this a bug, but it is a major missing feature in the evolution of gedit.

gedit is a text editor. all text editors are like that. it's not a flaw.
if you want to print your files with a binding marging, you might want to import it into writer or some other word processor.

Thanks for your suggestion. You are correct that gedit is a text editor. However, not all text editors are alike. As I said I like gedit. As I also said, adding a left margin to gedit, would greatly improve it, in the sense of relieving the user of a multi--step process to get a print out. gedit already has settings for right margin, which is the hard part. Why would adding a left margin (padding) be so hard to do?

most likely because you're the only one who wants to do publishing with a text editor.

In full screen I need it.
