how to use git plugin in current versions of gedit

Asked by Bob Cargill

I am using gedit 3.28.1 in Ubuntu 18.04 with gedit-plugins installed. I have enabled the git plugin in preferences. I can't find any way to activate or interface with the git plugin. I see references in some StackExchange questions to 'buttons' or 'icons' but there are none in gedit. There are no menus to speak of. For example, I located charmap under the 'File Browser' drop down menu to the left of the 'Open' menu. But there does not seem to be any reference to git in any of the drop-downs and no context-menu reference to git.
My actual question: How to use the git plugin in gedit 3.28.1 on Ubuntu 18.04?
Thank you.
