ubuntu 9.10 how do I stop displaying list of users at login screen?

Asked by pssl220

I have just upgraded from 8.04 to 9.10 and it seems great. However, there is one change I want to make. The initial login screen now shows all users created on computer. I prefer the older login screen where no users are listed. How can I prevent the list of users from being displayed?

You can go to System --> Administrations --> Login Screen and you my chose to log in automatically as one user and give some time for others to have the chance to login. The other option is to go to System --> Preferences --> Main Menu click on the left panel on System Tools and check on the right panel Configuration Editor. Then go to Applications --> System Tools --> Configuration Editor and under apps/gdm/simple-greeter check disable_user-list. After this, the user list shown at start up should be disabled.

Good luck.

Thanks for the response but it did not seem to do anything.

I also tried the gconf-editor from the terminal to do the same thing but that also did not seem to have any effect.

Well, seems to be more like a bug than a feature.

If you are still interesting to change login behavior I found that it seems that in Applications --> System Tools --> Configuration Editor after you check the disable_user_list option right click on it and chose Set as Default or Set as Mandatory. I've tested on my system and the old method of authentication appears with login name and password fields.

Good luck.
