Not able to login in 8.10 after upgrade from 8.04

Asked by Karunesh Johri

I was running Ubuntu 8.04. I tried to upgrade to 8.10. The upgrade process got completed and the system was re-booted. I got the login screen. When I entered username and password (of the administrative user of 8.04), the system hangs. It just shows a blank screen and nothing happens. There is no activity on the hard disk. Apparently, system boots properly but does not allow login.

Can you login to the console? Hit Control-Alt-F2 when you see the login screen. You should get a shell login prompt. Can you login there?

Thanks. Yes, I am able to login in text mode from console. Is it a problem with the graphical user interface?

Yes, it looks like a problem with gdm, the program that handles the graphical login. You could try to run "sudo apt-get --reinstall install gdm" from the command line; that will help if the package somehow got damaged.

Thanks again. I tried this but it did not change the status. Still, after entering userid and password, the system shows a blank screen. I am thinking of a fresh install from a CD.

I have since loaded 8.10 from CD and it is working fine. I think "Third Party Software" repositories are not enabled by default. So after upgrade, the system might be looking for restricted video driver (which it was using in 8.04) and not being able to install it.
