Your last session lasted less then 10 seconds

Asked by Tim B.

Hi there, I get a wicked error when I login over the login screen that ubuntu provides.

It says "Your last session was less then 10 seconds" basically. And then it restarts the X server and puts me back to the login screen. Now I booted with failsafemode that GRUB provides me, so I´m writing an Request here.

Im pretty new to Linux, so where can I find the logfiles to provide you with more information? I remember it said something like "dev/x couldnt be created" or something in the more detailed errormessage.

Thanks for this great tool here, looks really good. Bye Tim

EDIT: The error says something about "~/xsession-errors" but I cant find it. Would it help?

EDIT II: I managed to find the file and access it, here is .xsession-errors

Please press CTRL + ALT + F1 and login. The password will not be displayed. Then type

rm -r /home/tim/.ICEauthority

and press enter.

After that press CTRL + ALT + F7 and login again. You should be able to login again.

I too am getting a similiar error when I try to log in. The first screen that comes up is the error "Home directory listed as '/home/(my login name)/' does not appear to exist" which goes to error message Your $HOME/.dmrc has incorrect permissions & being ignored...file should be owned by user and have 644 permissions". After logging in it takes me to the xsession~error screen. I can get to a terminal screen but don't know what to put in it to boot up. Anything other than that just takes me back to the login page. I have tried the fixes reccomended from this note, # 487 and the one from Yanski on note 4258 and neither on worked for me.
As a note to this, I have four partitions on my drive (three primary parts and a swap for linux) with Win98SE installed first, Ubuntu on the second, and another Linux OS on the third. Before I installed the other Linux OS, the system worked fine with the Win98 and the Ubuntu. I did not start having this problem until I installed the third OS (the second Linux). Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks. jebush

I had a similar problem not being able to log in to the default GNOME session ( "your last session lasted less than 10 seconds" message). The problem came from the fact that I had created a .profile symlink linking to .bashrc. unlink .profile fixed the problem for me

I now also have this error :( this started when i was logged in as root, i clicked on the user switcher tool and right clicked on my own user name, this then displayed the login screen, i put all my details in and this error message popped up, since then i haven't been able to log in. Martin, your solution doesn't work for me.... i'm completely stumped :(

After logging into xfce I get the same warning dialog popup. Once I click OK I getted automatically logged out of my session and back to the login prompt.

The package manager upgraded my xserver-xorg-core package this morning before I shutdown and rebooted.

I will try the above fix in the above comment regarding the .ICEauthority file to see if it works.

Using xubuntu 8.04.

Following the fix to rm .ICEauthority does not work, I still get the error dialog window
