Login screen refreshes

Asked by Tanmay

Hi,
I have a strange problem with my Ubuntu 10.04 which has recently crept in.
Whenever i login from my login screen(where i put my password), ubuntu does not start, rather it again prompts me to login(in the sense it is like refreshing the screen). This is in an endless loop. However if i try to login from recovery mode,i am able to login from command line. i need to login from login screen(which i guess is called as GNOME).Please provide me solution.
Thanks

Try this to get some error messages:
startx

Verify there is enough disk space left.
Recovery mode also has option to clean-up and fix xserver.

Maybe try to purge gdm and reinstall or
dpkg-reconfigure gdm

If there was a graphics driver update purge and reinstall the driver.

Thanks for replying..but i was able to fix this problem. This problem had crept in because there was some problem with ~/.profile file. I had edited the file by adding the path of new directory but somehow i did it in wrong sense.
So the problem is now fixed.

Thanks
