cannot log in

hello, afterbeing in "root" i clicked the restart option ubuntu (11.04) ubuntu logs off the main screen but then hangs on the screen with ubuntu with dots underneath. The only way i could get out was to switch the power on & off to the laptop. I now cannot get past the ubuntu log in screen. It will ask for my password, when I type it in it will give me a blank screen for a mo as if to log in, then return to the log in screen. This happens for my profile and root. Can any one assit please. Any assistance greatly appreciated.

what if you login as a different user that isn't you or root (You should NOT log in as root, it is not supported or necessary).

My profile & root are the only ones on the computer.

Boot to root recovery mode and make a new user there.
