Ubuntu 11.04 can't unlock the login screen to change the desktop

Asked by Ian Milne

Had been using 11.04 with Gnome for a couple of months then some 3 weeks ago decided to load in the KDE desktop. This it did and the login screen is KDE but then when it loads in I get the Gnome desktop. Also when I try to change it through System Settings/Login screen, clicking on unlock doesn't do anything - what's gone wrong?

You select the session you want after clicking your username on the login screen. It's in the menu in this screenshot
