No sound on startup or shutdown

When I installed Ubuntu 11.04, there was sound on start up and shutdown; but now there is nothing( sound is not muted ). What is the reason and what should I do ?

Please press ctrl + alt + t and then type:

gdmsetup

unlock and select to activate audio ....

If still doesn't work left click on top right loudspeaker select sound spreferences settings and then select sound effects...
