Desktop won't start

Asked by Jesus Lovera

we recently installed ubuntu 11.4 on our new workstation.
It was working fine until now.
It boots and gets us to the login screen where the different users are displayed; when we try to login the screen goes black and then nothing else happens.
We tried loggin into the low graphics mode and this still failed.
We can log into root console and launch the x-server.

Any ideas?

Thank you
good idea but it did not work.
Do you know where any error messages are kept?

I finally fixed the problem.

it was caused by an incorrect installation of the package fsl
I edited /etc/profile.d/fsl.csh and commented out the lines in it and ability to login was restored.
There was an error in the path to the fsl installation and this was apparently the cause of login failure.

It is surprising that the system would be so fragile.
