Cant log into Ubuntu

Asked by MIKE

AFTER INSTALLING FONTS FROM MS: 'msttcorefonts' UBUNTU 10.10 DOESN'T LET ME IN ANY MORE -- IT ASKS FOR USER NAME, THAN PASSWORD, THAN SCREEN CHANGES TWICE, THAN IT TURNS BLACK FOR A SECOND, THAN I GET BACK TO USERNAME AND PASSWORD AND SO ON.
I HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE WITH UBUNTU 10.04 BUT THIS TIME I REALLIZED THAT IT HAPPEND RIGHT AFTER INSTALLING THESE FONTS, BEFORE THIS PROBLEM DID NOT HAPPEN.
ABOUT ONCE IN TEN TIMES, AFTER SWITCHING POWER OFF OR PUNCHING IN A WRONG PASSWORD, IT WILL OPEN. I TRIED CHANGING PASSWORD, REMOVING IT, LOGGING IN AUTOMATICALLY AND YOU NAME IT, NOTHING WORKS, IT JUST KEEPS ON ASKING FOR A PASSWORD, AGAIN AND AGAIN, WITHOUT LETTING ME IN.
THIS IS A BUG, BECAUSE IT OPENS FROM TIME TO TIME WITHOUT ANY PASSWORD OR WITH A WRONG PASSWORD !!

AS SIMILAR QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS PASSWORD-THING HAVE BEEN ASKED, SINCE YEARS, WHY NOT GIVE PEOPLE THE CHOICE TO USE A PASSWORD OR NOT ??? IT WOULD BE THE LOGICAL THING TO DO ! LINUX WILL NEVER GET AHEAD OF MS IF THEY TRY TO FORCE PEOPLE TO DO SOMETHING THEY DON'T WANT.
I WORK SINCE MANY YEARS WITH 'WINDOWS XP' AND I REMOVED ALL SECURITY (FIREWALLS, ETC., BY CHOICE) AND I NEVER HAD ANY SERIOUS PROBLEMS. AND IF I WOULD GET A PROBLEM, I HAVE TAKEN OTHER PRECAUTIONS THAT NOBODY FROM OUTSIDE CAN BYPASS. BUT I CAN DECIDE THE WAY I WANT TO DO THINGS, NOT SOMEBODY ELSE ! THIS IS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE DONE !!! THIS PASSWORD - NONSENSE BY ITSELF, KEEPS THOUSANDS OF CLIENTS AWAY FROM LINUX !!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR READING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND MY ARGUMENTS. I HOPE SOMEBODY WILL BE ABLE TO MAKE CHANGES, SO THAT A NICE PROJECT LIKE THIS, CAN GET AHEAD EVEN FASTER.

BEST REGARDS.
MIKE

please don't post in caps, it's nearly impossible to read, is unnecessary and looks like you are shouting, so DON'T! Where online do you see professional websites typed in all caps?

Just because no password works for you doesn't mean others will not get issues. Are you that egotistical that you think your situation will apply to all users. The internet is an extremely hostile environment and security needs pushing on users to save their ignorance from themselves. Why don't we turn of the encryption i online banking and have no passwords for email accounts too? Why don't companies and users just turn off their firewalls? it'd be chaos!

The password is required by pam, sudo and other mechanisms to authenticate the user. The skill level needed to run Ubuntu is LOW, this is the intention of the distro, to be good with those new to Linux. So security settings and such have been set medium/high to help them feel assured.

Thank You for Your reply,

Sorry that You can't read majuscules. I have caps on all the time because of
the limitations of these keyboards when changing language, this way I don't
have to change back and forth all the time. -- What professional and
unprofessional is concerned, I don't want to get into this argument. All
this is something else !

The subject is about passwords! I'm not 'egotistical' and think that my
situation applies to all users. All the contrary, I want users to be able
to execise their own free will and choose !! What do You prefer, having
the computer asking for a password and never beeing able to start working,
or beeing able to start working right away, without a password ?
What the dangers of the Internet are concerned, -- if for example, You have
children, do You teach them not to cross the street, without making shure
that no cars are coming, or do You simply think it is too dangerous to let
them do the thinking and attach them with a chain, like a dog ?

So to the question, 'if this answeres my question ?' No, of course not, it
has not even been touched !!

Here is the problem again: I can not use my computer because Ubuntu
keeps asking for a password, again and again. I can punch in the right
password a hundred times, it will always come back to the beginning.
But from time to time the program will open all by itself, without asking
for a password, or if it does and I deliberately punch in a wrong password,
it opens.
Do You see the problem ?

Regards.
Mike

If you mean the keyring password, if you set a blank password you will not be bothered. As only your user has access to your files it is fairly secure. The default is to use a password to encrypt the key but if you are comfortable with a plaintext key then you can do this without losing much security.

Thank-You. But I tried all this. It still asks for a password.
I don't mind giving a password once in a while, this is not a terrible
issue -- if it would work. But now my machine is like having a BMW in the
garage and every time I need it, it won't start !

Going back to my first e-mail. Do You think it has something to do with
those MS-fonts I downloaded ? (Before, the machine was working)
For my work I need : Arial, Arial black and Impact. From time to time some
others. -- Is there a way to get around this ? Do I have to reinstall all
software ? I try to get away from Winows but it just doesn't happen.

Those are part of the restricted extras package so won't make password requests increase.

Set a blank password for keyring using this:
http://maketecheasier.com/auto-unlock-keyring-manager-in-ubuntu-intrepid/2009/03/14

Works here :)
