mouse and keyboard frozen

Asked by Gregory Connell

I am using Ubuntu 10.10, when I restarted after canceling some updates I got the usual screen to choose what O/S I would like to use. i have Windows XP on one partition and Ubuntu on another, both using half of mu hard drive respectively. Choosing Windows works, choosing Ubuntu 10.10 goes like this; a fuzzy screen for about ten seconds, typical purple wash comes up, desktop shows, with shortcuts, Unlock Login Keyring Enter password to unlock your login keyring, and dI cant move the mouse cursor and the keyboard is unresponsive. Forced shut down and a reload to Ubuntu repair mode and it goes so far then freezes. forced restart only thing to do. How can I get back my beloved Ubuntu O/S? I have an E-machine with a new Winfast mobo and a XFX graphics card, I have 512 mb ram.
thank you for your support.
Greg

Once desktop is open and you have logged in use alt+F2 to get gnome terminal emulator the type in sudo apt-get --fix-missing install you will have to enter sudo passoword you wont see anything but it is there then type in sudo apt-get update then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get autoremove sudo apt-get update

Thank you for your help.

I have not been able to get gnome terminal emulator. After I choose O/S the fuzzy lined screen appears for a few seconds and my keyboard and mouse are unusable. I t appears to boot up, the purple splash screen the automatic login, the desktop the shortcut icons etc., but I can not apparently get a terminal to sudo anything after the "unlock login keyring" pops up. The mouse curser is not movable so I cannot enter letters and even if it did the keyboard is not working anyway.

Before choosing an O/S I can press "e"and can then press "Control C" which brings up "Grub>" and then pressing "Tab" gives me some command line options. Is that helpful?
