update to Maverick something has gone wrong with the install, it completed ok, rebooted and now all i get is the purple log in screen

Asked by Rogan

I tried to update to Maverick yesterday - something has gone wrong with the install, it completed ok, rebooted and now all i get is the purple log in screen without the ability to log in or launch terminal or anything.

Is there a way (using a live cd maybe?) that I can try to reinstall or worst case, revert to Lucid without losing my data?

I backed up before I did the update, but it's a pain to have to muck around with it if I can avoid it at all.

Thanks
Rogan

Boot to root recovery mode. If you run:

su foo

(replace foo with your username)

If you run:

startx

does it run ok?

Boot to root recovery mode and run:

dpkg-reconfigure gdm

It may help (reboot to test)

You may need to make a folder then move your gnome config folders to that folder, this will give your desktop default settings and may help.

did the dpkg but no luck - exactly the same thing happens... I'm calling the
the purple screen of frustration at the moment (rather than the blue screen
of death!)

I didn't understand what you meant by the second set of instructions though?
