Login Screen Settings Won't Unlock

Asked by ursaminor

Installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS. Lucid Lynx starts with no problem. Automatically logs in. After a couple of restarts or reboots text screen (not GUI) appears requiring me to log in. By going to Login Screen Settings I try to unlock but button does not respond. Going to gksu gedit /etc/gdm/custom.conf does not help.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop appears to work. Restarted twice to see. Logs in automatically. Will it last?

The log-in issue is not resolved. I logged in via the text log-in screen.

please login via the text log-in screen and then open a terminal and try this terminal command:

gdmsetup

Well, so far it has auto logged in so I cannot follow marcobra's advice. I don't know if it is fixed. Will have to wait and see.

Please also try this:
(the system will ask you a password: give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-desktop

sudo reboot

No go on permanent automatic login. Text log-in still appears but at other times auto login works.

marcobra requested the following:
