Is the apturl-feature totally disabled?

Asked by Jakob

I'm trying to open apturls in Firefox (i.e. http://apt.ubuntu.com/p/firefox or apt://firefox) with gdebi-gtk, not with Ubuntu Software Center - but this doesn't work: GDebi appears, but it doesn't load a file. On the other hand I can install (already downloaded) deb-files without problem via GDebi. Is this feature disabled together with the (former) possibility to add PPAs via apturl? If so, why does USC distinguish between both and GDebi not?

So this is not a problem of a malfunction on my PC but doesn't work in general?

Not sure personally, I've never used it but I know of it.

So I created a bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/956890.

gdebi never had the functionality of handling apt: links, you may want to install "apturl" package for that.

Addition: If you have software-center installed, you may also need to set apturl as default handler by running the following command:

xdg-mime default apturl.desktop x-scheme-handler/apt

Can you help with this problem?
