When I give a command 'gedit' from command prompt I get an error as follows

How did you get the root shell?

Try:

gksudo gedit README

It looks like some sort of bug, looking at this similar report: http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=93858

The command you suggested

gksudo gedit README

also gives the same error.

OK, I'm not a gconf expert, but it looks like some sort of gconf issue. Perhaps try the following (as per here: http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ ):

"Try shutting down gconfd (gconftool-2 --shutdown) and running the gconf-sanity-check-1 or gconf-sanity-check-2 applications - these will tell you about common problems. Also, be sure you have the latest GConf version.

If you can't figure out what's going on, mail <email address hidden> with the following information:

    * Exact error messages from any applications.
    * Exact version of GConf 1 and GConf 2 that you have installed.
    * Output of ps jaxwww | grep gconf.
    * Output of gconf-sanity-check-1 or gconf-sanity-check-2 if any.
    * What operating system are you using, and what version of it.
    * What appears in the user.* syslog (see above for how to turn on user.* syslog).
"
On my box gconf-sanity-check-2 is in /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2

It might be worth emailing <email address hidden>, as they suggest.

gconf-sanity-checlk-1 or 2 does not run
the error is

bash: gconf-sanity-check-2: command not found

while the file exists in the folde you have suggested.

please guide

You must enter the explicit path to gconf-sanity-check-2 to run it, as it's not on the default search path. Did you do that?

I've been experiencing this problem also. There is definitely a permissions issue going on here. I violated the prime directive and logged on to graphical console as root and gconftool-2 and gedit were happy as pie. I do have orbit installed and with IPv4 enabled. I'll retry with IPv4 off, but I'm betting that gconf isn't happy with anyone but real root.

what worked for me was changing the permissions of the files in .dbus/session-bus/ from root to me...

Can you help with this problem?
