Migration configs from 11 to 12 Ubuntu

Asked by MF

Hi. Give me advice please that is going wrong. I have backed up home directory. And trying get configs for some programs like gnome-terminal, dropbox, skype, gmenu and etc. But Programs in Ubuntu 12 have no reaction for it and run as fresh installed, or with strange problems as in the skype I have bold English letters and thin Cyrillic it looks pretty ugly. Is this possible have only configuration migration ? I've read that most configs store in gnome register. How can I move the register?
And one little thing configs from few generation ubuntu an before make fresh install I've upgraded system to 12.04 (32) and with this configs fresh install give me very different result especially for AWN . Now I'm trying ubuntu 12.02 (64).

Most settings are stored in hidden folders in $HOME, if you back those up and copy them into the new install it should be used, assuming that they are compatible.

I don't want have each and every config file. Because in time it became very mess. I have .compiz and .compiz-1 folders and many places and so on. Synaptic have segmentation fault if I copy my old home as is. I test it couple times it defenetly $home problem.

Have a look at
~/.config
~/.gconf
~/.local/share/

Except for classic mode (gtk2 apps), nautilus scripts, keyrings ... ~/.gnome2 isn't dramatically important since Gnome3 and Unity, a majority of apps migrated their configs mostly to ~/.config.

Problem is that I already copied .config and gnome-terminal have no changes. Compiz have no configuration at all. And can you explain why I have .compiz-1 it's very strange but not .compiz. Which is really config?
ll | grep compiz
drwxrwxr-x 3 mf mf 4096 мая 17 20:58 .compiz-1/
mf@mf-laptop:~$ ll .config/ | grep compiz
drwx------ 3 mf mf 4096 мая 17 20:25 compiz-1/

Not sure since when (Natty 0.9.2?) but ~/.compiz was long ago replaced by ~/.compiz-1.
User config is in ~/.config/dconf, there is still a migration going on between gconf and dconf (gsettings), but compiz is still based on gconf backend, compiz profiles (incl. unity-plugin) are in gconf.

Can you help with this problem?
