how to remove the read-only attribute from menu.lst so that I may edit the startup (boo() line.

You need to edit it using sudo:-

ALT+F2
gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

You can user the ALT+F2 keys to open a run window and the enter in it "gksu gconf-editor" (if you don't have the gksu package installed, it must be installed first). When you get asked for the password you enter your account password. When you start gconf-editor in this way you should have write permissions for everything.
