1) Screen resolution.
If you are in gnome (Default on breezy), you can click the "System" menu on the top of your window then -> Preferences ->Screen resolution.

2) Playing movies.
You can use Applications -> Multimedia (Or video and sound) -> Totem.

Applications -> Multimedia (Or video and sound)-> CD-player for playing audio cd`s.

But vlc is king over all media players (for me personaly), if you want to install this on ubuntu you need to open a shell.

Applications -> Acessories -> Terminal

and when you see $ type

$ sudo apt-get install vlc
password: <your password here>

This will install vlc. With vlc you can capture webcams and broatcast it in a stream watch dvds play music. (Btw on kde i suggest you to use xmms as music player).

sudo apt-get install <package name>

allows you install the package you desire to use

Screen resolution: do as Johnny Mast said, if that doesn't work, edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf: type alt-F2 and type in "gksudo 'gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf'", hit enter and search for something like this:

 SubSection "Display"
  Depth 1
  Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

Replace it with:

 SubSection "Display"
  Depth 1
  Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

Then restart "X" (the program that handles graphics) by logging out and pressing control-alt-backspace.

MP3 and other codecs can be installed by installing the "gstreamer0.8-plugins" package in Synaptic (system -> administration -> synaptic package manager). Make sure you have the universe repository enabled.

There is some sort of "control panel": System -> preferences (your account only) and system -> administration (system-wide, requires password). If you want something that looks more like a control panel, hit alt-F2 and type in gnome-control-center, then press enter. (It's the same as the preferences menu)
