no desktop have show desktop icon ticked but still no desktop

If you press ALT+F2 can you run:
nautilus

Hi :)

Please can you try using the Ubuntu Cd as a bootable Cd
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
Perhaps try different combinations of the boot-options it offers

This should get you to a working desktop?
