cpp error: missing cc1

I have reinstalled cpp with dpkg, aptitude, and synaptic package manager but cannot get the error to go away: missing cc1.

I found the problem: I needed to reinstall cpp-4.4 explicitly (I had hosed it somehow). I used:

  sudo aptitude reinstall cpp-4.4
