Asked by Per Kristian Hove

Hi, are there any plans to build gap 4r8p6 for Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus?

Updates to existing packages in already published Ubuntu releases are done only if there is a specific reason.
If the new version provides significant improvements over the old one, or important bug fixes, then an update might be done.
See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates for information about the SRU process.

As an alternative maybe you can find a PPA with the newer version for xenial somewhere (see https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas?name_filter=gap ), or you can create a PPA of your own, or you could try building the new version from source.

A manual installation of the 4r8p6-2 version for zesty on your xenial system seems not easily possible, because the new version depends on libreadline7 which does not exist for xenial. You would have to find a solution for this first.

Thanks for your reply. I tried to build it from the 17.04 sources, and that worked fine.

By doing this, I observe that the 4.8.6 build for 17.04 does not include any of the packages that are now bundled with gap (please refer to https://www.gap-system.org/Releases/index.html "Packages included in this release" for the full list, this is a significant change compared to earlier versions of gap).

Since we need the full set of packages we will use a local custom build of gap instead of using the launchpad packages, and as a consequence we won't have any need for 16.04 builds of these packages.

I suggest that you create a bug report, if there are parts missing in Ubuntu's gap packages (and aren't provided elsewhere like e.g. gap-alnuth which is a separate package).
