One bug and one email notification question

Asked by Arturo

Hi folks. I have two minor annoyances since I upgraded to Feisty

1. When I open the Buddy List, it resizes itself horizontally to about 4 or 5 times the screen size. Any ideas?

2. Email notifications do not come up as pop-up windows in Gnome, which is a feature I loved. Now they're notified as guifications. Is there any way to change it?

Thanks!

Fur the Buddy List, do any of your buddies have a very long name? Alternately, is your status message very long? If neither of these are the case, try resizing the window to match your preferences, and then selecting Quit from the right-click context menu of the gaim applet in the Notification Area.

For email notification, the mail-notification package provides an icon in the Notification Area (looks like a closed envelope). Right-clicking on this, and selecting properties allows control of the message popup behaviour. Selecting "Enable message popups" should restore the pop-up windows.

Thanks, Emmet

The window resize thing only happens sometimes, so I think it's a bug. I've tried what you said and it seems to work. We'll see...

As for mail-notification, it displays emails received through accounts with IMAP/POP3, but Yahoo and Hotmail (my accounts) don't support it. Any ideas?

Thanks again

Regarding Gaim, my system also occasionally has difficulty remembering window placement. The behaviour seems to be improving with time, but I don't think all the issues are solved yet. If you are able to determine what causes the window manager to not maintain the window geometry preferences, please file a bug (or provide info here, and I'll gladly forward it). This doesn't have to be a deep understanding, just a repeatable set of circumstances to help someone investigate. I'm not sure there's much benefit to opening a bug to report that the window size is not stable, as that is very hard to troubleshoot without further information.

Regarding mail notification, I have neither Yahoo! nor Hotmail accounts, and so the following is untested conjecture. There are two packages in the repository designed to collect mail from these websites and store them on the local machine (fetchyahoo and gotmail). From what I understand, each of these can be configured to download mail from the appropriate website and store it in a local mbox file. Either evolution or mail-noticiation can be configured to check the mbox file, and notify of new mail. There seems to be somewhat limited documentation available in /usr/share/doc/ for either of these packages, but both appear to have useful documenation on the websites.

There are also two packages, hotsmtp and hotway, which emulate a POP3 server and SMTP server using Hotmail. Installing these is more complicated, but it would allow you to configure a local mail tool to use POP3 and SMTP for all your Hotmail usage. I did not find any equivalent services for Yahoo!

In summary, I believe that fetchyahoo is currently your best choice for Yahoo!, and would suggest using gotmail for Hotmail, in preference to howsmtp and hotway, unless you are prepared for significant configuration effort. Note that the use of fetchyahoo and gotmail will result in a local store of messages, so deletion of messages may require deletion in multiple locations (online and off). If you primarily use a sngle machine for email, you may wish to autodelete on successful download (after a testing period) to avoid needing to periodically delete mail from the web repository (unless your quota is sufficient that you never need to delete :))

This happened to me with the email guifications as well. As soon as Gaim got a notice of an email it expanded the window size horizontally indefinitely until I clicked on the notice. Now I also cannot resize it smaller either, it is stuck at 3 or 4 times the size of the entire screen.

I had the same problem. Disabling the "Extended Preferences" plugin seemed to do the trick to get control of the window size again. As soon as that plugin is re-enabled the gaim window expands to lala land again

Can you help with this problem?
