Typed message is not displayed in send message box.

I am using GAIM 2.0.0Beta which I used for the first time when a buddy invited me for a chat. I accepted the chat but when I started to type my reply in the box provided the letters were not displayed but the cursor was moving as I typed. I noticed that underlining would display but no letters or numbers were displayed. My buddy said that he could read what I sent, uncluding the smiley. Any help appreciated.

Look at the preferences if your font colour is the same as your background colour
