Gaim is online but empty of all clues to chat with someone

Asked by larrycraig

I think Gaim/ubuntu is set up and logged in, but the pantry seems to be bare! Shouldn't there be a a source for open chat or something so I can test it out before I bother my friends about setting their chat up in Gmail?

According to what I have I need to know the name of the chat room and anyone I want to chat with off hand. This seems odd to me. Can anyone give me a clue. It seems there are many things unknown in ubuntu.

Gaim is an open source project that Ubuntu uses as its default messaging client. If you are having specific problems operating Gaim you may to browse Gaim's documentation. Gaim's webpage can be found at:

http://gaim.sourceforge.net/

I use Gaim to talk with my friends who use AOL Instant Messenger and my co-workers who use MSN. If you have an AOL screen name or an MSN screen name you can set it up within Gaim to use as your messenger. Gaim should realize your buddy list as well.

Gaim provides a variety of other supported chat options including, but not limited to ICQ, Yahoo, Jabber (which Gmail uses), and IRC. IMHO Gaim is a much better at handling the message protocols (ICQ, AIM, YAHOO, MSN, etc) than it is at handling IRC.

If you are looking to just use IRC I'd recommend using a program called "xchat". xchat provides a much cleaner interface for a mutli-room chat environment.

This was a long time ago for me. What it is about is obvious when you begin to understand. However, there are no clues in the docs. This is it: You need to have an account in the mode you use. Enter your online name and password, for example, in msn hotmail, or yahoo, then it will log in to the appropriate account. Very simple.

The question is: Using Ubuntu Dapper Drake (6.06 LTS) on AOL AIM, how do you initiate a chat room session in Gaim/Pidgin? In the Buddy List window, I don't see the button/icon for starting a chat session, just one for joining a session that is already going on. How does the session get initiated from Gaim/Pidgin?
