Assuming you are using gaim, you can have a lot more than two accounts logged on at a time.
Press Tools->Accounts in the gaim main window (or ctrl-A if you're feeling lazy) and then you can add accounts and log them in to your liking.

You could add more then 1 aim accounts with kopete (on kde) and have them next to each other

Yes, but that'd be using KDE.

Have a look at some of the "Advanced" documentation for Gaim - you can do wonderful things with "buddies", such as converting them into people. Such as:

- Andrea

    andrea436 (youraccount1)
    andrea435 (youraccount1)
    andrea436 (youraccount2)

These three then get merged into a person, and depending on the order of the accounts on the buddy list, gaim will handle them being signed on and off automatically.
Keep in mind that gaim will change a _lot_ with Gaim 2.0.0 which will be out at some point around January.

Can you help with this problem?
