ubuntu repair nightmare.

i was dual boot with xp and ubuntu,xp crashed then reinstalled xp.Then grub was out and xp restored the MBR and wrote xp onto it.I thought restoring ubuntu was easy.read some manual about it online,google,ubuntu forums.it said i need to boot from ubuntu live cd and restore grub.i did what happened then.i dont see ubuntu but
grub with menu saying ubuntu kernel.when i check that nothing happens,i get some error message that ubuntu cant mount partitions,root and home.Please provide a method to restore grub,ohhh,i mean restore ubuntu when dual booting with xp.using gui interface whenever such bad things happen.
