Should removing fonts-font-awesome also remove texlive-full in 18.04?

Asked by Javier Ignacio Reyes Garcia

Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS

The TexLive software is installed from the standard installer provided by the owners of the product:
https://www.tug.org/texlive/acquire-netinstall.html
Version:
pdfTeX 3.14159265-2.6-1.40.19 (TeX Live 2018)

The fonts-font-awesome package is installed from the default ubuntu repositories:
fonts-font-awesome/bionic,bionic,now 4.7.0~dfsg-3 all [installed]

I want to migrate the font to the provided new Font Awesome 5. To avoid issues, I want to remove the previous version installed.
When I do apt remove fonts-font-awesome, it shows that the dependencies are:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  fonts-font-awesome texlive-fonts-extra-links texlive-full

Why would the font try to remove the whole texlive-full package? I have tried to find an answer but nothing seems to be around.

Any suggestion, correction or advice is welcome.

This seems to be a conflict between different versions from different sources.

I assume that you have installed an older version of TexLive from the standard Ubuntu repositories (probably version 2017.20180305-1 ), and that one is going to be removed when you uninstall fonts-font-awesome (which in turn is a package from the Ubuntu repositories).

To avoid version conflicts between two different TexLive installations on your system, it makes sense to uninstall the one from the Ubuntu repositories.

Commands to verify my assumption:

dpkg -l | grep texlive
apt-cache rdepends fonts-font-awesome
sudo updatedb
locate tlmgr
locate -i pdftex

Due to other accumulated problems, I decided better to reorganize the entire OS (trying to organize fonts, I misstyped and deleted several ttf system fonts). Just FYI, the texlive was not installed from the repositories, but directly from the standalone perl installer that texlive provide.
