you can install latest version of flash player from ubuntu software center. just search for flash. you can als download one from the adobe website.

I've got the same problem, I think. The video appears to load (I see the first frame of the video), but will not stream. Hitting play/pause has no effect other than toggling the icon.
This happens in both Firefox and Google Chrome browsers.
The weird thing is that I can play embedded Youtube videos from Facebook or other referring sites; I just can't play them from youtube.com directly.
For now, I've taken to using youtube-dl for the ones I care about, and just skipping the rest.
And yes, I've installed restricted-extras, adobe-flashplugin, every codec pack available from Medibuntu, etc.

Nevermind; the following procedure fixed my problem:
apt-get install gnash-common
apt-get purge gnash-common
apt-get purge flashplugin-
apt-get install adobe-flash-
(restart browser)
