adobe flash not working

Asked by Ben Raichel

I am running ubuntu 11.10. I tried installing adobe flash a couple times, and cannot get it to work.
Here is some information from my system asked for in a previous post.

benjamin@Hercules:~$ lsb_release -a; uname -a; dpkg -l | egrep 'flash|gnash|swf|spark'

First run this command in the Terminal:

sudo apt-get purge flashplugin-downloader flashplugin-installer

(It's OK if it tells you that flashplugin-installer is not installed. On the other hand, if it tells you that it cannot *find* that package and it doesn't remove flashplugin-downloader, please let us know.)

Then open the Software Center, find the package called adobe-flashplugin (you may be asked to enable the partner repository to install this), and install it.

Then close any web browser windows, go back into your web browser, and see if Flash works.

It is still not working. There were two choices in the software center. I
chose the one called "Adobe Flash Plugin 10".

What happens when you go to a website that uses Flash? Are there error messages?

Please also see if Flash works when you use a different web browser. For example, if you've been using Firefox, you could try the Chromium browser (you can get Chromium by installing the package called chromium-browser in the Software Center).

And please see if Flash works when you log in to your Ubuntu system using a different user account. If you only have one user account, you can create a second one for testing purposes.

I am not suggesting that using a different browser or a different user account should be considered a solution, even if it works -- rather, these are diagnostic steps, for the purpose of determining where the problem is.

When I try to watch a video it says: "you need to upgrade your adobe flash
player to watch this video"
and then it gives a link to adobe's website.

It does not work in Chromium and it does not work under another account.

@doreen biskup
You've linked bug 873673 to this question. Can you explain how you think that bug relates to Ben Raichel's problem?
