No, the Ubuntu restricted extras. Search for "Ubuntu restricted extras" (with out quotes in the software center. Install the package and then restart your system and hopefully Cnet videos might work.

Do you mind un-installing the flash plugin from the software center and the extras package along with it, make sure no flash is on your computer. Then restart. After that, just install theUbuntu restricted extras package.

can try Chromium like actionparsnip is suggesting. I found one more last

Maybe this is simpler than it seems. Perhaps the problem is that, somehow, the installed flash packages were not properly reported. After all, actionparsnip's command was not actually run quite as asked, and also, on a minority of systems, dpkg -l doesn't seem to correctly report installed packages. Try this--and please copy it and paste it into the Terminal, rather than typing it in:

apt-cache policy gnash\* flashplugin\* swfdec\*

That command must be on one line when you copy it to the clipboard. If it's split into two lines in your email, come here to https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+question/153506. Running that command will produce plenty of text--probably about 200 lines. After running that command, select all the text in the Terminal (starting with the line on which you entered that command), copy it to the clipboard, and paste it here.

So much for this being simpler than it seems. ;-) It appears that you indeed do not have any Ubuntu package providing your flash plugin. Of course, that could have been just because you removed it recently in the Software Center, following Jason Odoom's advice. This is consistent with how flash now doesn't work in any sites. Do you remember what packages you removed in the Software Center? If you are not sure that you remember exactly, then open /var/log/dpkg.log in a text editor, select all the lines from the last couple days (to make sure it includes the log of the removal operations), copy them to the clipboard, and then either:

(1) If it's a few hundred lines or less, post it here.

(2) Otherwise, use http://paste.ubuntu.com, and post the link here.

@Jason "I only told him to remove the Flash plugin and install the restricted extras."

There is ambiguity in the meaning of "the Flash plugin." I was trying to make sure that ambiguity wasn't hiding the problem.

From the information in this question, I knew that flashplugin-nonfree was installed and presumably then removed in the Software Center. That does not speak to the question of any other related packages or separate flash plugins that may been installed before, and then removed in the Software Center. That's all I was trying to find out. In particular, flashplugin-nonfree is a transitional package--installing it will install flashplugin-installer, but removing it will *not* remove flashplugin-installer (and will not remove the installed Flash Player Plugin). This is a source of significant confusion, as people sometimes install this package to get Flash, and then assume that Flash is not installed when they find that this package is not installed.

The information Jim Watson has just provided has clarified that: (1) There is no reason to believe that the original problem was caused by multiple flash plugins (for example, Adobe Flash and Gnash), provided by Ubuntu packages, having been installed simultaneously and coming into conflict (something that had not conclusively been ruled out before), and (2) the current state of his system is, in fact, in line with what you had asked him to do.

I'll post the relevant text from /var/log/dpkg.log for everyone's convenience.

@Jim
Since the removal of flashplugin-nonfree and flashplugin-installer resulted in you losing what Flash functionality you *did* have, it seems likely that you had this installed originally, and that it was providing your Flash plugin. But let's be sure of that.

(1) First, because I am not exactly sure about *when* you posted saying that it didn't work, can you confirm that you have tested these sites and they both don't work, *since* you were last in the Software Center? (@Jason: This checks to see if the solution you suggested worked. If it did, we're done, and you solved his question.)

(2) Install the package flashplugin-installer. This will probably not fix the problem, but check to make sure.

Assuming it's not fixed...

(3) Remove flashplugin-installer and flashplugin-nonfree completely (including their configuration files), clear your package cache, and then reinstall flashplugin-installer. You can do this from the Terminal with:

sudo apt-get purge flashplugin-installer flashplugin-nonfree
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer

Please post the text from the Terminal here for examination.

Then close all browser windows, open your browser again, and see if the problem is fixed. If it's not, please tell us exactly what works and what doesn't (at least, of the two sites you've provided information about so far, whether neither works, or just one of them).

If it's not fixed...

(4) Clear the cookies and cache in your browsers (let us know if you have trouble doing this), then close all your browsers, and then run this command (you can paste it into the Terminal before you close all your browser windows):

rm -r ~/.adobe/Flash_Player

Then restart a browser and see if the problem is fixed.

If it's still not fixed...

(5) To provide diagnostic information (and not as a permanent workaround), see if this problem affects a different user. If you only have one user account on your Ubuntu system, go to System > Administration > Users and Groups and create another one. Then log out from you user account, log in as that user, and see if the problem persists. This will not conclusively reveal the cause of the problem but knowing if it happens with a different user account distinguishes between two classes of major causes.

Just watched a video on cbs.com. Will start the 5 steps you suggested Eliah. Thanks to all for your assistance and patience. In this exercise I have used the terminal, software center and synaptic package manager without any understanding of their differences. Hope it isn't compounding the problem.

"How do I resolve the differences between the 2 users?"

The situations I'm aware of where a site-specific Flash problem persists the same in multiple browsers but only for one user are situations where ~/.adobe/Flash_Plugin was not effectively removed, or where one browser's settings, cookies, or cache are imported from the other. Do you know if either of these situations applies here?

Do you still have the text from the Terminal from steps 3 and 4? If so, please post it. If not, do you remember what happened when you did step 4? Did the command run OK? (If you saw nothing, then it did--on the other hand, if there was some message produced, then it might not have).

My apologies, you had already posted the text from the Terminal in step 3. How about step 4? Do you still have (or remember) that?

Well, that's what's supposed to happen--that indicates that step 4 succeeded. Assuming that it was after step 3 that you entered your web browser and found that flash still didn't work on the CNET site, the problem was not due to files in ~/.adobe/Flash_Player.

I wonder if the two different users have different add-on's installed or enabled in Firefox. This doesn't address why the same behavior occurs in Chromium for both users, but it nonetheless an obvious thing to check which we have not checked. For each user, please open Firefox and go to Tools > Add-ons. Click on Plugins at the top of the Add-ons window. See if the plugins present are the same for both users, and if all the plugins that are enabled/disabled are the same for both users, and if the versions are the same for each plugin for both users. If they are the same, then please expand the window to show all the entries, take a screenshot (press the Print Screen key or go to Applications > Accessories > Take Screenshot), and then post it somewhere on the web, such as http://postimage.org, and link to it here. If there are any differences, please do that for both of them. The most convenient way to examine the differences might actually be to take a screenshot of one of them and compare it to the other.

Everything looks OK there.

While we're continuing to work on this, you may be interested to know that the following workaround will probably be effective, as a temporary measure, to get Flash to work on the CNET website, even when you're logged on as your normal user account. Assuming that your normal user account (where Flash on CNET is broken) is called jim and the other user account (where it works) is called mary), then while you're logged on as jim you can press Alt+F2, type/paste in this command, and press enter to run it:

gksu -u mary firefox

Similarly, if you want to run Chromium as mary when you're logged in as jim, you can run:

gksu -u jim chromium-browser

These commands require that you (jim) be an administrator, but from the Terminal commands you were able to run before, I know that you are. Please note that this is very much like logging in as mary and running Firefox/Chromium -- bookmarks you create will be created for the user mary, and files you save will, by default, be saved in mary's home directory (and if you try to save them in your home directory you will likely be unable to do so, if mary does not have the necessary permissions to create files there). Therefore, this is not a good long-term solution, but it may improve your productivity and your Ubuntu system's usability during the time before we find a real solution.

If you try this workaround and it doesn't work, please let me know, because that would be very interesting and would definitely contribute to understanding the problem you're experiencing. (It's unlikely that the workaround won't work.)

You can create shortcuts for these commands, for example, in the Unity launcher, so that they run with a click. If you want to do this and need help doing it, please let me know.

I'll try to post again shortly suggesting the next thing to do, to investigate this problem.

Correction: That second command (to run Chromium as mary) should have been:

gksu -u mary chromium-browser

Well, this is interesting.

When flashplugin-installer (the package that provides--or at least so we thought--your Flash plugin) was installed, the plugin it fetched was of major.minor version 10.2. But in the Add-ons menu in Firefox (for both users), the major.minor version was 10.3.

Have you ever installed a Flash plugin in any way besides in the Software Center, in the Synaptic Package Manager, or in the Terminal? For example, have you installed Flash from within Firefox, by clicking the Install... button when prompted?

Just to be extra-special sure (maybe it was updated or another plugin was installed), please run this command and post the text starting with the line where you entered it (as usual):

apt-cache policy adobe-flashplugin flashplugin-installer flashplugin-nonfree

(That should all be on one line when you copy it to the clipboard to paste it into the Terminal. If you're viewing this in your email, you might want to come to https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-nonfree/+question/153506 to copy it.)

If (a) flashplugin-installer is installed with a version number starting with 10.2, (b) flashplugin-nonfree either has the same version number or is not installed, AND (c) adobe-flashplugin is not installed, ....then that strongly suggests that you have a separate (possibly broken) flashplugin installed (and providing, or trying to provide, major/minor version 10.3). This plugin would be installed...but not via Ubuntu's system of package management. We would have missed it so far because it would not have been installed by, or be associated with, any Ubuntu package. In that case (i.e., if conditions a, b, and c all apply), then to investigate this, please quit all browser windows and run:

sudo apt-get purge flashplugin-installer flashplugin-nonfree

When that finishes, please reopen your browser, post the text from the Terminal associated with running that command, open Firefox, go to Add-ons, click Plugins, take a screenshot (this time you can specify a delay of 1 second, which should work around the bug where the Take Screenshot window is shown in the screenshot itself, see bug for more information), post it on the web, and link to it in your reply post.

Are you still using that program? Does that program require version 10.3 in order to work, or does it merely force it to be installed along with it? If you don't need that version, then please perform the steps I detailed above after "if conditions a, b, and c all apply". (You needn't actually check for them, given that you know that 10.3 was specially installed.)

OK, this is as expected, given the information we have recently found (about how you have a possibly broken Flash 10.3 plugin installed, but not with Ubuntu's package manager).

You said you have a program that forced this to be installed. If you need to use that program, and that program needs Flash 10.3 in order to work, then you should perhaps not remove that. In that case, we'd have to figure out how to fix it (so it works with CNET). Please say so, if this is the case.

Otherwise, select the entry for Flash 10.3 in your list of plugins, and click Disable. If you can, use Firefox to uninstall this plugin. (Make sure you don't have any Chromium windows open when you do this, as potentially they are using this same plugin and could interfere with its removal.) Please report whether or not you were able to actually remove it, but either way, after disabling it (and removing it if you can), open a Terminal window, close all your browser Windows (for both browsers), and run:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer

Then go back into Firefox and see if the problem is fixed.

This is a departure from the steps I suggested, but I don't see that as a problem. Nonetheless, if I am to help you, I need to know more specifically what you're trying to do (with Flash-Aid) and what it is that's not working.

OK, good. Progress is being made. ;-)

Before you had posted the most recent screenshot, you had removed the 10.2 plugin, by purging the flashplugin-installer package. Have you reinstalled that since?

I wonder if perhaps, for some reason, when both versions (10.2 and 10.3) were installed, Flash 10.2 was being used in the jim account, Flash 10.3 was being used in the mary account, and CNET was only working (or only working on your machine, due to other factors) with version 10.3. While a bit strange, that would explain everything we have seen.

Now that you have removed Flash 10.3, can you run Firefox as the mary user, verify that Flash 10.3 is no longer listed in the plugins list (and if it is, use Flash-Aid to remove it and then exit the browser and run it again), and then see if CNET still works? If the issue is as described above, then the steps you've taken to make sure you only have one Flash plugin version installed would have broken mary's ability to access CNET. (As before, please check in Chromium too, for both jim and mary, and please check the "control" site, CBS, as well.)

OK, so much for that hypothesis then.

Typically, when something in a web browser is broken for a specific user, it's due to something in that user's local data for the web browser. Since CNET is broken for you (user jim) on both Firefox and Chromium (and broken for the user mary with neither of those browsers), I had decided to operate under the assumption that it was *not* due to user-specific data in your home directory that is also Firefox-specific or Chromium-specific. We did investigate if it might be due to user-specific data in your home directory that is also Flash-specific (when you removed ~/.adobe/Flash_Player).

On the other hand, if Firefox and Chromium are both affected by a similar issue, then that assumption may not be warranted.

Let's see what happens when you move all your Firefox user-specific data away from where Firefox looks for it. This will make it like Firefox is running for your user account the first time. You will be able to restore it (or, if this fixes the problem, then you'll probably prefer to selectively restore it), because you're just moving it, not deleting it.

Make sure all Firefox windows are closed (but Chromium can still be running), and run this command in the Terminal (I recommend copying and pasting it rather than retyping it, which I also recommend for the rest of the commands in this post -- also, please note there are optional instructions for creating a separate backup of the .mozilla folder, at the end of this post, which you may want to do first):

mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla.old

Now restart Firefox. Since we moved your whole profile from .mozilla in you home directory (where Firefox recognizes and uses it) to .mozilla.old in your home directory (where Firefox does not recognize or use it), you now don't have any of you original bookmarks, cookies, cache, user-specific settings, and so forth--but you'll be able to get them back by reversing the above operation (as detailed below).

After running that command, see if the problem still persists. If it does, then let's be extra-special-careful -- quit Firefox again, make sure Chromium is not accessing any pages that use Flash (or just quit Chromium too), and run this command (in case this problem is due to an intersection between user-specific Flash data and user-specific browser data):

rm -r ~/.mozilla ~/.adobe/Flash_Player

Then go back into Firefox, and try again. If the problem still isn't fixed, then please post all the text from the Terminal (from running these commands). In that case, you can restore your original Firefox profile by quitting Firefox (i.e., closing all Firefox windows) and running:

rm -r ~/.mozilla; mv ~/.mozilla.old ~/.mozilla

It's critically important that you not forget the semicolon after the first instance of "mozilla" in that command, or it will remove your original Firefox profile as well.

If you want to back up your original Firefox profile *before* doing any of this (i.e., you would do this before the first command given in this post, in case you make a mistake and clobber your Firefox profile), then you can do that by closing all Firefox windows and running:

cp -R ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla.backup

If you have a lot of stuff in your profile, that may take a while.

OK, time to move on to the next idea ;-)

Apparently the Adobe Flash player still sometimes stores some user-specific content in the .macromedia folder, as well as the .adobe folder. So, try closing all browsers and running this command (again, I recommend copying and pasting the command into the Terminal):

rm -r ~/.adobe/Flash_Player ~/.macromedia/Flash_Player

Then go back into a browser and see if that fixed the problem.

"What did we (you) do?"

Way earlier, I had directed you to remove the folder ~/.adobe/Flash_Player, which I had thought was sufficient to clear all user-specific Flash data. It had not occurred that Flash also (sometimes) stores user-specific files in ~/.macromedia/Flash_Player. This did not occur to me since Flash hasn't been a Macromedia product for quite some time (Adobe bought Macromedia years ago, so it's Adobe Flash now). Since (a) the problem was specific to your user and using a fresh Firefox profile didn't fix the problem, (b) removing just ~/.adobe/Flash_Player hadn't fixed the problem, (c) fixing the issue with the versions hadn't fixed the problem, and (d) the problem wan't version-dependent (i.e, both jim and mary were using the same version of Flash), I figured that perhaps Flash was storing files somewhere I wasn't aware of. To search for them, I had been planning to ask you to run this command:

find ~ -iname \*flash\*

(See http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/maverick/en/man1/find.1.html if you're interested in how that command works.)

But I decided to run it on all my Ubuntu machines first, in case it would more readily reveal something not specific to your system. And it did--I found on one of my systems that there was a Flash_Player folder inside a .macromedia folder, as well as one inside the .adobe folder. That's when I realized that Adobe Flash still (at least sometimes) stores (some) data in this Macromedia-specific location, and directed you to remove the ~/.macromedia/Flash_Player folder as well as the ~/.adobe/Flash_Player folder.

Since this ended up working, that indicates that CNET-related flash content had been saved to the ~/.macromedia/Flash_Player folder, and that some of this content was messing up flash functionality on the CNET website. This could potentially be due to a bug in Flash, but is more likely to do with a bug in CNET's flash applet(s). (Of course, it is possible that it is due to some convergence of bugs in both Flash and CNET's flash applet(s).)

Given this, in the future, instead of asking people to run the command

rm -r ~/.adobe/Flash_Plugin

I will instead ask people to run this command in the first place:

rm -r ~/.adobe/Flash_Plugin ~/.macromedia/Flash_Plugin

(By the way, in case you're wondering, if you had just run the command "rm -r ~/.macromedia/Flash_Plugin" that would probably have worked, but [a] it was no more difficult to also clear out the Flash data stored in the .adobe subfolder of your home folder, and [b] there's a slight but plausible possibility that the existing problem-causing data in ~/.macromedia/Flash_Plugin could have caused the CNET website to cause problem-causing data to be rewritten to ~/.adobe/Flash_Plugin upon each visit, so I figured that running the longer command "rm -r ~/.adobe/Flash_Plugin ~/.macromedia/Flash_Plugin" to clear out both locations at once would be even more likely to succeed.)

"Is there a way to print all of this for study?"

Yes, there certainly is, though a better page to study would have been one where I had known that Flash still stores data in ~/.macromedia/Flash_Player as well as ~/.adobe/Flash_Player. ;-)

This page should stick around for a long time, and if it does go down it will likely be accessible at http://archive.org. Plus, you could save this page and have it available. But if you do want to print it, then you can just use your browser's print function (Ctrl+P). If you want to print out just one post (or just a few posts) but not the whole thing, then it might work better to copy the relevant posts to a text editor before printing it.

This whole question page, at present, if printed, would probably be about 36 pages.

Printing from a web browser usually works without problems. Is it not working for you?

By the way, earlier in this thread you had said:

"In this exercise I have used the terminal, software center and synaptic package manager without any understanding of their differences."

I didn't reply to that at the time, because I didn't want to overcomplicate my responses, but these four pages, taken together, provide information that explains the specific purposes of each (as well as other methods). However, in this case, they were really all being used to accomplish the same kinds of tasks--the advantage of the Terminal was that, by posting the text from it, it was perfectly clear and precise exactly what operation you had told Ubuntu to perform, and exactly what the result had been.
