Video's on Firefox not playing: Black screen on YouTube, 'An error occurred please try again later.'

Asked by Caron Margarete

I use Ubuntu 10 with firefox 3.6.13 on an Acer Aspire 4535 64bit laptop.

I have a black screen and am unable to watch youtube (or other video's). I have done as suggested on the firefox support site by going through all of the extensions, none seem to conflict when I disable/ enable each in turn.

I have also attempted the last command actionparsnip mentions in Question #134187 on this forum:
<quote> ok this will fix you up:

sudo apt-get --purge remove swfdec-mozilla swfdec-gnome flashplugin-installer libswfdec-0.8-0; sudo apt-get --purge autoremove; sudo apt-get clean; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y install flashplugin-nonfree

Should be ok</quote>

I got this result:
<code>

Did you quit Firefox, and all your web browsers, and restart them? If not, try that.

Otherwise, let's start the diagnostic steps from the beginning. Please run this command and paste its output here:

dpkg -l | grep flash; dpkg -l | grep gnash; dpkg -l | grep swf

Also, does YouTube work in any other web browsers (like Google Chromium)?

Hi Eliah, yes, I restarted after I ran the command earlier today, and again just now.

The requested command information:

caronmargarete@caronmargarete:~$ dpkg -l | grep flash; dpkg -l | grep gnash; dpkg -l | grep swf
ii flashplugin-installer 10.1.102.65ubuntu0.10.04.1 Adobe Flash Player plugin installer
ii flashplugin-nonfree 10.1.102.65ubuntu0.10.04.1 Adobe Flash Player plugin installer (transit
ii gnash 0.8.7-0ubuntu1 free SWF movie player
ii gnash-common 0.8.7-0ubuntu1 free SWF movie player - common files/librari
ii mozilla-plugin-gnash 0.8.7-0ubuntu1 free SWF movie player - Plugin for Mozilla a

As for other web browsers, I don't use any others. I have windows installed but can't use it at present because for some entirely unrelated reason it keeps rebooting. I'll deal with that when I can get around to it. For now, let's just get me watching video's through Ubuntu.

You have both Gnash and Adobe Flash installed. They interfere with each other, so you should remove one of them. Gnash is open source free software, whereas Adobe Flash is proprietary freeware. However, Gnash is not nearly as fully-featured as Adobe Flash and may not be suitable for your needs.

To remove Gnash and keep Adobe Flash, run the command:

sudo apt-get purge gnash gnash-common mozilla-plugin-gnash

To remove Adobe Flash and keep Gnash, run the command:

sudo apt-get purge flashplugin-installer flashplugin-nonfree

If you want to remove Gnash and keep Adobe Flash, but the command above doesn't work, then run the other command (i.e. to remove Adobe Flash too), and then reinstall Adobe Flash with the command:

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer

All those commands should be run when Firefox is not running (i.e. quit Firefox before running them, and don't start Firefox back up again until they're done, unless of course they take an extraordinarily long time and you need to run Firefox in order to describe the problem and request further assistance).

After carefully following those instructions, if YouTube videos still don't play, please post again, and we'll keep working on the problem.

Eliah! Thanks! Both for the excellent replies and being spot on. I removed Gnash and didn't need to remove/ reinstall Adobe so I'm now sorted...

Don't suppose you wanna tackle the windows problem I've been having??? Jokes. I'm prepared to ignore that one for a little while longer.

Thanks again!

I'm glad I was able to help with your Flash problem.

I recommend posting on a Windows forum for help with your Windows problem, as your Windows problem does not appear related to Ubuntu.

@actionparsnip: If you mean the part where I shamelessly reused the diagnostic command you always ask people to run, to search for installed packages providing Flash, then yes...and thank you for your numerous contributions! Your efforts are reflected in the answers and solution to many Launchpad questions...even many that you don't directly participate in.

For me I'm just grateful there's people willing to answer the same stuff over & over when people like me have no idea if their problem is a regurgitation of a previous question. It all looks like another language to me.

So y'all, cheers.

It's cool man =D

Was joking hahaha. I find it flattering, mind you I always steal Marco's big list of commands to get packages straightened out.

The user got the gold and that's all that matters really, I do have a HUGE amount of karma points but they don't get me a new car or money so I don't really care. People are happy and that's something that does matter

Keep up the good work y'all

peace

I have the same problem that Caron Margarete describes. I'm using Kubuntu 10.10 with firefox.

I also had Gnash installed (although aptitude fail to see it; only apt-get did it); but I still don't have youtube videos, although other flash applications (games) work well.

@KAlexandro
Your problem might not be quite the same as this one. Please start a new question (https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-nonfree/+addquestion), and describe exactly what you've done so far and what's happened. If you want to make sure I'm aware of your new question, so that I can help you with it if nobody else gets around to doing so first, then feel free to post a comment here with a link to the new question.
