Flash update not recognized

Asked by Frazzle

Hello,

I am a total newbie to Ubuntu and am having problems getting Firefox to recognize the Flash update that I have added, therefore cannot view Flash pages. Is this a constant issue that hasn't been resolved yet as this is denting my confidence in Ubuntu as a viable next o/s. I am using version 10.10 installed alongside Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop. I took all the normal steps for adding the plug-in and then trying to reload the page to see if it worked.

Thank you.

Can you give the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a; dpkg -l | grep flash; dpkg -l | grep swf; dpkg -l | grep gnash

Thanks

How did you updated Flash? Normally Firefox recognises this the moment you update the plugin with update-manager for example.

Simply by clicking the link to the Adobe site and then getting the plug-in from there and although the Software Centre recognized it the browser didn't. Is it possible that it's a Windows plug-in hence not running in Ubuntu's Firefox?

Actionparsnip: I'll provide you with that as soon as I can get home but I'm not sure how to get the access privileges if I need it.

Thank you.

You don't need any extra access, users can run those commands, just run it as ONE big command in a terminal, what is the output please

Here is the output from the commands:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 10.10
Release: 10.10
Codename: maverick
Linux ubuntu 2.6.35-24-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 2 01:41:57 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
ii adobe-flashplugin 10.1.102.65-2maverick1
Adobe Flash Player plugin version 10
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And I have just tried to load up the Flash page again and it seems to have resolved itself! I don't know why it didn't work immediately, maybe it needed Ubuntu to restart although nothing suggested it. I'll keep testing the Flash pages and keep you posted if anything else goes wrong related to it unless, you can suggest something else right now? Thank you.

Oh, I clicked Tools -> Manage Content Plug-ins and found a whole list of different Flash players from Adobe and other brands :-? which one is the best for Ubuntu compatibility? OK, one issue at a time then! :-)

Try:

sudo apt-get --purge remove adobe-flashplugin; sudo apt-get --purge autoremove; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

Should be ok. If not I have the hardcore version which I know works :)

I'm afraid of causing a mess as Flash works now. I have discovered that all that I needed to do was to restart the browser although no prompting exists towards that. Are you sure I could use those commands cleanly?

If it works, don't fix it ;)
